AVONDALE — The Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) athletics department had a big night on Tuesday as the program picked up five victories and saw its’ high school women’s cross country team finish third in its meet, while the men’s team finished eighth overall.
The first victory came from the women’s golf team, who finished first at its match at Lincoln Country Club. Sarah Kate Dobbins shot a match-best 44.
The JV volleyball team also picked up a victory in straight sets over Cherryville. The JV team has won two of its last three matches.
The varsity volleyball team picked up a five-set victory over Cherryville (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10) winning its second consecutive match to move to 6-8 on the year and 4-3 in conference play.
The women’s tennis team was the third team to pick up a victory over Cherryville on Tuesday, winning the match 7-2. Lucy Logan (6-2, 6-1), Emerson Brooks (6-1, 6-0), Madison McComas (6-0, 6-0), Addison Milner (1-6, 6-2, 10-4), and Mildred Curtindale (6-2, 7-6 (6)) all picked up singles victories. In doubles play, Milner and Maris Rogers picked up an 8-6 win, while McComas and Grace Christman earned an 8-2 win.
The middle school boys soccer team stayed unbeaten on the season, defeating East Rutherford 3-0.
The middle school softball team fell to East Rutherford but had several bright spots during the game.
The women’s cross country team earned a third-place overall finish at the SCA Invitational on Tuesday. Sophia Smart (8th), Audrey Friedman (10th), and Stella Friedman (14th) all earned top-15 finishes in a race consisting of over 115 runners. Aby Nechayev finished 23rd, while Maggie Beard placed 35th overall.
In the men’s race, Tanner Richards led the way with a 24th-place finish, while Owen Pierce finished 44th, Ryan Byrd placed 58th and Dylan Betancur finished 60th.
In the middle school two-mile run race, TJCA’s Isaac Magid placed first overall and Samuel Magid finished 4th.
